Overwatch – Archives EventPublished April 21, 2021
From April 6th to 27th is this year’s Overwatch Archives Event. Join in to earn new epic and legendary skins, and participate in new weekly challenges!
Overwatch was developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. Released in 2016, Overwatch is a team-based first-person shooter. Players are divided into two teams of six. They are given the option of selecting a character from a roster of 32 different playable characters called heroes that fit into three types of roles: tank, damage, and support. The unique characters and atmosphere of the game are inviting, and its easy-to-learn gameplay and strategy make Overwatch very accessible to new players. Overwatch has received overwhelmingly positive reviews and is currently available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
This month is the annual Overwatch Archives Event. Players are given a chance to redo co-op missions and earn skins and cosmetics that they may have missed in previous events, and completely new and original legendary character skins for Genji, Soldier: 76, Widowmaker, Tracer, and Zarya. These can only be earned from Archives loot boxes or by purchasing them for 3000 gold each in the Hero Gallery.
Weekly challenges are necessary to win new epic skins for Lucio, Zenyatta, and Mercy. This year’s Archive Event has replaced the familiar system of requiring players to win nine wins in any game mode with a new system based on earning stars from participating in various event missions and challenges to earn credit. Each of the new epic skins for Lucio, Zenyatta, and Mercy requires 30 stars.
Three new challenges have been added in the Archive Brawls. The Story Mode for the Retribution Challenge allows players to play as an Overwatch special strike force, including McCree, Moira, Genji, and Reyes (later known as Reaper), or players can select All Heroes Mode to choose any character. Your team can also choose from various Challenge Missions that may allow enemies to heal other enemies, only permit the player’s critical hits to do damage, or make it so enemies can only be killed if a player is sufficiently close to it.
The Story Mode for the Uprising Challenge allows you and your friends to team up as Tracer, Torbjörn, Reinhardt, or Mercy to defeat a robot rebellion. Challenge Missions include the option of making enemy barriers invulnerable, or causing enemies to drop lava upon dying, or making the player a ‘glass cannon’ with significantly reduced health but increased damage capability.
Finally, the Storm Rising Challenge covers a storyline in which players can team up as Tracer, Genji, Winston, and Mercy to defeat the dangerous villain Maximilien through the streets of Havana. Or you may choose to play in All Heroes Mode to select any Hero you wish. Challenge Missions allow the player to enable enemies to have area-of-effect damage, disallow any support heroes, or causing some enemies to be enraged and spread rage to other enemies upon death.
The number of stars you earn from these Challenges will depend on how successful your team is during a mission and the difficulty setting on which you’re playing. Other factors are involved, and apparently, even if you fail to complete the mission you may still earn a small number of stars. This week players earn double credit for Retribution Missions, so it would be good to do that to quickly gather the required stars to unlock the Subaquatic Zenyatta epic skin.
The most recent update also fixed a few bugs, including one that caused heroes to become stuck on some midair objects. Another that caused specific ability effects to remain on targets even after the hero caused the effect was switched out by their player. One that caused hero ragdoll models to fall through the environment when the player chose to skip the kill cam playback.
We’re really excited about the changes Blizzard made to the Overwatch Archives Event. It is much more dynamic and exciting to earn stars through challenges and missions rather than just completing a string of potentially the same match mode over and over. Don’t forget that this Overwatch Event ends on the 27th so don’t miss out!.
